Call upon the Name of the Lord

I had this on my heart this morning. Maybe it can help someone.

Genesis 4:26 “…then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.” 1

This seemingly random passage is tucked away in the midst of the genealogies in the Book of Genesis. At first, it is tempting to gloss over it and miss its significance entirely. I believe this to be one of the most profound verses in all of Scripture.

Consider that movements are made of moments. This brief moment would be the beginning of a movement of true worship of the One True Living God. Between chapters 3 and 6 of Genesis, only a few generations had passed, but humankind had gone from sinless perfection to “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Gen. 6:5).

Yet in the midst of all the evil things that mankind had done, we see a sliver of righteous hope…one person ‘began to call upon the name of the Lord.’ One person…in one moment…made one right decision…and that gave hope to all mankind.

It was not too late for those generations, and neither is it too late for us. Today, no matter how far we have fallen…no matter how many mistakes we have made…no matter how many bad choices…in this moment we can begin our movement towards God. All we have to do is the same thing mankind has always had to do… “call upon the name of the Lord.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13. Be encouraged! God is never farther away than a prayer. All we have to do is turn around and call upon Him. That one moment will begin your movement towards the Lord.
